Jabiru Bushratz  Rugby Union Club season 2010
and Presentation night

2010 has been another big year for the Bushratz, we kicked things off before the NTRU season had even begun when we hosted the fantastically successful Kakadu 10’s tournament. Ratz stalwart and assistant coach Drew Weaver submitted to a full body wax to raise money for the Leukeamia Foundation Shave for a Cure. With support from a few team mates who shaved or coloured their hair, nearly $15,000 was raised. We also donated just shy of $1,000 to the NT Cancer Council, the profits from the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness match, where the team proudly donned special hot pink kit to raise awareness of Breast Cancer.

Jabiru residents generously provided delightful pink themed treats that were sold at a cake stall on the day. We wrapped up our home games with a delicious pig on the spit. Thanks to Drew Weavers’ dedication our juniors travelled to Darwin most weekend to play for the Casuarina Cougars, giving them the chance to develop their skills and build friendships. On the field the seniors played hard and finished the round robin competition in second place. Unfortunately last Saturday afternoon the mighty Bushratz bowed out of the Able Finance B Grade NTRU finals race with a hard fought 16 vs 12 loss to old foes the Darwin Dragons.

The game was a real slog, with neither team asserting clear dominance for any extended period. With the end of the playing season comes the time when everyone can get back to their neglected camping gear, fishing gear....oh and families! But before we close the door on 2010 season we invite you to scrub up and party down to help us celebrate a fantastic year of rugby in Jabiru at the Gagudgu Croc Hotel on Friday September 24th starting at 7pm. We are still finalising the finer details of this event which will feature delicious food and live entertainment by one man band Wounded Dog. Tickets are $60, including your meal, entertainment and two free drinks. Call Lisa 0409 800 467, Christy 0417 064 316 or Vikki 0428 467 116 to reserve your tickets now, and watch this space for further details about this event, which will with your help be an enjoyable and fun filled community event.

The right things to do are those that keep our violence in abeyance; the wrong things are those that bring it to the fore. - Robert J. Sawyer, 1960-present

Wealth is the slave of a wise man. The master of a fool. - Seneca, 5 BC-65 AD

Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. Nothing does - except wrinkles. It's true, some wines improve with age. But only if the grapes were good in the first place. - Abigail Van Buren, 1918-present

*** Article: Maybe You Shouldn't Set Goals After All - By Richard Fast ***
------------------------------------------------------------

Surprisingly enough, setting goals may actually hinder your chances of life-long success!

Let me begin by saying that goal setting is wickedly effective. In other words, if you desire an outcome, and make it a goal, the odds are likely that you'll achieve it. And therein lies the problem.

Let me explain.

If you decide you want to drive your car from your house to the city, that's a goal. You likely don't give it a second thought. You just decide and then execute. We all set and achieve hundreds of these kinds of goals every day. These are not the goals I'm referring to.

The goals that may actually hinder your chances of long-term success are the crucial life-changing goals that are improperly set. These are the big goals that require significant focus, and, if achieved, can have a monumental impact on your life, but if slightly missed, they can have a devastating effect.

Setting a goal is a powerful tool, and it must be used properly. If misused, it can have seriously negative consequences.

I discovered the potentially destructive force of incorrect goal setting somewhat by accident.
Martial arts has adopted a simple and effective way to motivate students on a step-by-step, or a goal-by-goal process through the use of colored belts.

When a student begins studying a martial art, he will begin by wearing a white belt. Nobody enjoys wearing a white belt for too long, because it's a very visual sign of one's achievement and mastery.

The belt system in most martial arts goes from white to yellow to orange, green, blue, brown and black. Each color represents the next plateau or goal. In many respects this belt system provides massive incentive.

Having studied several martial arts, I can attest the effectiveness of the belt system in motivating students. If everyone went from wearing a white belt until they achieved the "coveted" black belt, many more students would drop-out along the way. The mileposts of belt attainment have a magical way of breaking the goals into manageable steps. With each new belt students get a strong motivational lift that keeps them striving toward the next color.

Although this belt system is extremely effective, it also has an underside that perfectly mirrors the danger of incorrectly setting a goal.

Almost all martial arts students begin with the same goal in mind ... to achieve a black belt. In the majority of cases that I've witnessed, when a student finally achieves the long coveted black belt, very often within a few months, or even weeks, he'll drop the sport. I've witnessed this happen time and time again, and I always swore it would never happen to me.

If you're not familiar with martial arts you might be thinking; "Well why wouldn't he drop the sport if he's got a black belt? What else is there to learn?" If that were the case, it would be an excellent question, but in reality, achieving a black belt means that one has only mastered the fundamentals of the art. Following the attainment of a basic black belt, there are ten more degrees, or dans, that represent the path to true mastery and lifelong study.

The last martial art I practiced was jiu-jitsu. Like all students I was striving to achieve my black belt status. Although that was my "first" goal, I had always thought that I would pursue my study well beyond the basic black belt level.

Interestingly enough, each rank and each belt I received, strongly motivated me toward striving for the next and the next. When I finally achieved my black belt ranking I had a distinct feeling of having reached a definite goal. When I first began wearing my black belt I had a defining sense of accomplishment and a desire to pursue my studies further, but then within a few weeks a very subtle disinterest began to settle in. I found myself making flimsy excuses to miss a class here and there and within a few months I had dropped my classes completely.

Let me say that if I really wanted to resume my studies of jiu-jitsu I obviously could, but at this point I've simply lost the desire, and THAT is the whole point.

How is it that martial arts students can passionately pursue their study for a number of years, and almost from the moment they achieve their goal of a black belt, with so much more to learn, they can lose interest so quickly?

I believe it's because of the underlying power of goal setting. As long as we are striving toward our goal, we have an invisible sustaining force. The moment we achieve our goal we have a natural tendency to let-up.

In this example, consciously or subconsciously, I was totally committed to achieving my black belt status. After that, I think I had a vague goal of continuing my study of the art, but the real, defining goal was achieving the rank of black belt.

Conversely, from the time I was fourteen until I was twenty-seven, I was a seriously heavy chain-smoker. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle were the furthest things from my mind.

When I eventually quit smoking I decided to pursue a life-long, healthy lifestyle of frequent exercise. Part of my plan was not to associate quitting smoking with the initially uncomfortable feeling of exercise, so I waited a full six months before I started.

When I finally began to incorporate exercise into my life, I started very slowly. I began with a running routine. I never set a goal to run a marathon, or to run ten miles or anything like that. My goal was to incorporate exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. In fact the word goal in this instance is actually the wrong word. What I really did was switch my thinking from that of a "goal" to that of an intention.

As a result I have managed my exercise program for over twenty-five years. It has been such a part of my life that I simply couldn't imagine living without it.

Setting a goal such as cleaning the garage or painting the house are perfectly fine because they're an end in themselves. Setting goals around things that we would like to incorporate into our lifestyle can be both limiting and dangerous.

The next time you consider setting a goal, you might want to consider how you can incorporate your new desire into a permanent way of living.

Intending to live your life a certain way is infinitely more powerful and lasting than setting a goal. There really is no goal when it comes to a lifestyle because it's so much more than that. It becomes something that you are. It's an intention to live your life the way you choose to live it.

For this simple reason why not change a life-time goal from a goal to an intention?

Goals represent a finish line, but intention represents continuous achievement and a lifetime of mastery.

Joke of the Week

The Husband's Housework!

My friend's husband is always telling her that housekeeping would be a snap if only she would organize her time better. Recently he had a chance to put his theory into practice while his wife was away.

When I popped in one evening to see how he was managing, he crowed, "I made a cake and frosted it; washed the kitchen windows; cleaned all the cupboards; scrubbed the kitchen floor, walls, and ceiling; and even had a bath."

I was about to concede that perhaps he was a better manager than his wife, when he added sheepishly, "When I was making the chocolate frosting, I forgot to turn off the mixer before taking the beaters out of the bowl, so I had to do all the rest."

Northern Territory News
Family of five in Kakadu crash NT News
August 26th, 2010 Police are urging drivers to take regular breaks on long haul trips after a family of five were involved in a rollover at Kakadu. Police received a report of a crash shortly before 3:20pm on the Kakadu Highway about 70km west of Jabiru. A family of five were travelling in a Toyota Tarago from Katherine to Jabiru when it is alleged the 32-year-old male driver briefly lost concentration which resulted in the vehicle to veer off the sealed road. The driver has then attempted to correct the vehicle but came off the road again and rolled into a drain before landing on all four wheels. Fire and Rescue officers attended the scene and rescued a 32-year-old female passenger from the vehicle who had been sleeping with her feet on the dash board. "I can't stress enough that it is not safe for passengers to have their feet resting on the dash of a vehicle," Superintendent Brent Warren said. "This was a lucky escape for the young family and just shows how important it is to have regular breaks when driving on our roads, it is better to be late than not arrive at all." The female passenger was taken by Jabiru Health Clinic Ambulance to the Jabiru airstrip and then flown to Royal Darwin Hospital where she remains in a stable condition. The male driver, a 3-year-old boy and 9-month-old twins were taken to the Jabiru clinic but were allowed to leave shortly after.

Not far down the gravel road we came across a tour vehicle on the wrong side of the road, for a moment we thought they had hit a tree but they had actually lost a wheel, yep the whole wheel was on the L/H side of the road in the bush and the vehicle was on the R/H side of the road. It was actually a bit scary but everyone on board was unhurt and safe. Once we made sure they were ok we continued on. We were making fairly good time until we hit "the 4WD track" and yes it was a track for 1 vehicle with little turnouts if you come across another vehicle and every 1km or so... Continued

Weekly Horoscope
Aries

You like obstacles. Obstacles give you something to work around. They give you something to do. At least that's your viewpoint at the outset of the week. Absolute force may not be the best way forward; sheer charm may be a lot more potent. Wednesday and Thursday, when all the barriers before you suddenly lift, you and your comrades march toward victory in a shower of confetti. You have no time to celebrate on Friday and Saturday, what with your family's demands on your time, but Sunday is all yours. Call your friends. A small party is in order.

Taurus

You wake up on Monday feeling like a character in a romance novel. Your entire life seems oriented toward the prospect of love. (Or perhaps you're already in love -- lucky you.) Flattery and sex appeal figure strongly on Tuesday as well. Wednesday you're too busy thinking about your wallet to spend much time thinking about your heart, and Thursday finds you crippled with indecision about your work life. But worry not: The weekend returns you to the realm of red roses and boxes of chocolate. If you're single, Saturday's your chance to do something about that.

Gemini

You have more strength than you realize, and you're a lot farther ahead than you think. If a spreadsheet has you cross-eyed on Monday or Tuesday, don't panic, just ask a math-minded friend for help. Wednesday and Thursday will have you seeing things more clearly than you have in a while. You will also meet more new friends in the span of a few hours than you've met over the last few months. The tide is finally going your way -- if only some cash would float by. Friday and Saturday might be thwarted by infighting among friends, but Sunday is pure love and peace and laughter.

Cancer

There was a time when most people thought Columbus was nuts. The lesson: The wildest notions are sometimes also the wisest. Not that you have any broad theories about the Earth to impart on Monday or Tuesday. (Although you do feel a bit like the captain of a ship.) Wednesday finds you overwhelmed and irritable, but you don't have to let anyone else know that. It's all about how you come across. Put your best foot forward on Thursday: Be alert and communicate clearly. Emotions are running high at the end of the week, but so is your energy. You are indefatigable. You have the energy of an early explorer.

Leo

You are a success. You are almost a legend among your coworkers. But enough about what they think: How do you feel about what you're doing? That's the big question on Monday and Tuesday, and it stays in the back of your mind all week. When someone asks casually about your life goals on Wednesday or Thursday, don't be shy. Modesty and pride are major themes on Friday -- as personal qualities go, they are not as contradictory as they seem -- and Saturday finds you feeling happy and in control. Sunday is one of those top-of-the-mountain days. Get out your diary, because it's a day you'll want to remember.

Virgo

It's healthy to have the jitters before traveling; the prospect of unfamiliar territory provokes that response in many people. An open, philosophical approach -- rather than a strictly practical approach -- is the way to go during the first half of this week. You are the master of your destiny. Thursday in particular has the potential to be a great or terrible day, depending, in large measure, on you. On Friday, if your energy is flagging, ask your friends to rile you up (they'll be happy to oblige). Saturday's a good day to spend around others as well, although Sunday's a stay-at-home sort of day.

Libra

A diplomatic tete-a-tete may be necessary to smooth things over between you and an important (if volatile) ally early this week. Maybe bake some cookies and bring them along to the occasion. If you two have been at each other's throats lately, it may be because you have so much in common; find something to laugh about. Midweek, you and your friends are laughing nonstop about an inside joke, but on Friday there's really not much time to do anything except work. Find a way to appreciate beauty and harmony while getting things done. You'll have all of Sunday to be social.

Scorpio

The push and pull at the start of the week isn't a fight per se, it's just several people trying to establish interpersonal boundaries. Take a stand and be upfront, but if a compromise here or there will make things easier, you can handle that. You'll need as many people on your side as possible on Wednesday and Thursday, when stressful money matters require immediate attention, but Friday is all about foreign restaurants, ocean journeys and long cerebral conversations. On Saturday you get what you want without even having to ask for it. On Sunday, take it easy.

Sagittarius

On Monday, think small. Don't be so concerned with how you're going to harvest apples from a tree you haven't planted yet. Get the tree planted and worry about how to make apple pie after you're surrounded by buckets of apples. Worrying in advance isn't a good use of your time, especially on Wednesday and Thursday, when you already won't have enough time to get done all the things you need to. On Friday, you'd like to rely on the help of your friends but your energies are mismatched. You may have to go this one alone. Some good news: Sunday is a lucky day.

Capricorn

If you have nothing else to do on Monday or Tuesday, spending some time in nature would be a swell idea. Indulge in several hours of doing nothing at all. By Wednesday, you won't have a spare second to yourself -- friends are talking your ear off, strangers are introducing themselves to you. Thursday promises to be zany, too. Energy levels surge on Friday, and by Saturday, all the havoc in the rest of your world seeps into your home life. On Sunday, if you feel like throwing a blanket over your head and turning off the phone, everyone will understand.

Aquarius

An unexpected phone call gets you thinking about someone you haven't thought of in years. The start of the week is defined by strange discoveries made in strange places, and the middle of the week is defined by -- lucky you -- love. A sizzling affair: strawberries, whipped cream, the works. Wednesday is pure bliss and Thursday is the sequel. It only follows that Friday will be something of a letdown. Try not to let it drag your entire weekend down. Your emotionality is not in charge; you're in charge. Organize your feelings and get plenty of sleep. Sunday is an energized day.

Pisces

It's a cold, hard world sometimes. Thankfully, there are blankets. Monday and Tuesday are cozy days -- hot dinners, soft music, maybe some poetry -- and Wednesday is a fairly dreamy day, too. On Thursday, try your hand at being creative, but don't be too specific about what you do. Clarity of thought isn't as important as fullness of feeling. Friday is a romantic day -- again, poetry figures strongly -- and the mystery of this other person in your life is endlessly thrilling. Saturday puts you in a creative mood again, but Sunday is a day for practicalities.

Did you know?

Uranium is an extremely heavy metal, but instead of sinking into the Earth's core it is concentrated on the surface. Uranium is found almost exclusively in the Earth's continental crust, because its atoms don't fit in the crystal structure of the minerals of the mantle. Geochemists consider uranium one of the incompatible elements, more specifically a member of the large-ion lithophile element or LILE group. Its average abundance, over the whole continental crust, is a bit less than 3 parts per million.

Uranium never occurs as bare metal; rather, it most often occurs in oxides as the minerals uraninite (UO2) or pitchblende (U3O8). In solution, uranium travels in molecular complexes with carbonate, sulfate and chloride as long as the chemical conditions are oxidizing. But under reducing conditions, uranium drops out of solution into mineral form. (Carbon behaves the same way, as do several other elements.) This behavior is the key to uranium prospecting. Uranium deposits mainly occur in two geologic settings, a relatively cool one in sedimentary rocks and a hot one in granites.

Buddhist Quote

“To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.”
